Fibroids, Cysts
PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

A spontaneous myometrial growth or swelling frequently of unknown origin which performs no physiologic function and develops independent of normal laws of growth and repair. (Also termed "fibromas" or leiomyoma).

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Tumors may occur in any tissue and consist of fibrous tissue, nerve tissue, epithelial tissue and frequently are formed from cholesterol or fatty tissue. Pain or discomfort of functional disturbance may accompany the tumor depending upon the site and kind. These occur in 30% of women over the age of 35 and are often asymptomatic, discovery being made during the pelvic exam. They may, however, cause excess menstrual bleeding and/or pelvic pain or bloating. Their growth is increased during pregnancy and with estrogen therapy, and they tend to atrophy after menopause. They may either grow into the lumen, into the pelvic cavity, or remain in the wall of the ovary or uterus.
