Tumors may occur in any tissue and consist of fibrous tissue, nerve tissue, epithelial tissue and frequently are formed from cholesterol or fatty tissue. Pain or discomfort of functional disturbance may accompany the tumor depending upon the site and kind. These occur in 30% of women over the age of 35 and are often asymptomatic, discovery being made during the pelvic exam. They may, however, cause excess menstrual bleeding and/or pelvic pain or bloating. Their growth is increased during pregnancy and with estrogen therapy, and they tend to atrophy after menopause.
