The ability to convert glucose in to glycogen for storage in the liver and reconversion to glucose for energy usage is impaired in diabetes. Large amounts of sugar accumulate in the blood and spill over into the urine. The increase output of urine causes a severe loss of water-soluble nutrients, especially vitamin B-6 and others of the B-complex, as well as magnesium, potassium and zinc.
