CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME
PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
During the course of its evolution, the Epstein-Barr virus has established a nearly perfect parasitic relationship with humans. A perfect parasite, such as Epstein-Barr virus, ensures the survival of both parasite and host. Infectious Mononucleosis is an acute infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the herpes group. In the past EBV probably took place primarily in young adults and in children, only rarely does it cause significant illness. In adolescence and adulthood EBV infection is usually expressed as mononucleosis. Recently it has been associated with the term Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, affecting a large range of our population and age groups.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
The symptoms may mimic those of many other infectious diseases including hepatitis, rubella and toxoplasmosis. It may produce prodromal symptoms such as headaches, malaise and fatigue, sore throat cervical lymphadenopathy, temperature fluctuations, jaundice, maculopapular rash, splenomegaly, stomatitis, and pharyngitis may also develop.
An absolute must:All concentrated carbohydrates such as refined sugars etc., must be eliminated from the diet until condition improves. Relief of symptoms includes absolute bed rest during the acute febrile period. Diet should be light with high fluid intake. Encourage patients to drink cool shakes made wit ha high quality, pre-digested protein powder with Lactobacillus Acidophilus and bifidobacteria added to restore friendly gut floraand to help the already compromised digestive system. Red meats and fried foods should be avoided.
