PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

1. The common form of asthma is due to hypersensitivity to an allergen. Characterized by recurrent paroxysms of dyspnea (difficult breathing) of a wheezing type due to obstruction of the flow of air in the smaller bronchi and bronchioles.

2. Asthma is a lung disorder marked by attacks of breathing difficulty, wheezing, coughing, and thick mucus coming from the lungs. The episodes may be started by; breathing foreign substances (allergens) or pollutants, infection, vigorous exercise, or emotional stress.

3. Asthma: An allergic disorder characterized by spasm of the bronchi, swelling of the mucous lining of the lungs and mucous
production.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

There is a spasm of the bronchial apparatus with swelling and the production of mucous that tends to clog the airways. The presence of adventitious sounds all over the thorax is noted even with the most casual examination. In general, there is a metabolic disturbance with poor protein assimilation, and there is most frequently a condition of hypoglycemia in all these cases. The approach as outlined under "hypoglycemia" should be considered in asthma conditions.

Obviously an effort must be made to eliminate any allergen that can be demonstrated to be a causative, or contributing factor. Poor nutrition, a general debilitated state, and a psychogenic background are commonly observed especially in children. The older the patient, generally the more intractable the condition. A diet designed to reduce, or eliminate the hypoglycemia so often seen, as mandatory. Milk, eggs, wheat, citrus, fruits, and white potatoes are the most common food allergens. Organic brown rice is one of the finest foods to be recommended in these cases as very few people are allergic to rice, and rice could be the basis of the diet.

-HOMEOPATHIC CONSIDERATIONS:

Constitutional treatment when amenable can lead to increased levels of health or longer states of homeostasis. (Miasmatic remedies are often helpful in asthma). Helpful homeopathic pathological remedies:

Arsenicum album: irritable weakness, fears suffocation, wheezing, restless, burning, thirsty for sips. [30c frequently during attack.]

Blatta orientalis: Dyspnea. Acts well in corpulent patients. [Use low potencies or mother tincture.]

Quebracho (Aspidosperma): Increases oxidation and excretion of carbonic acid. Stimulates respiratory centers and increases oxygen in the blood. Keynote: "Want of breath during exertion." [Mother tincture or low potency.]

EMERGENCY MEDICINE!!

Adrenaline: Adrenaline or epinephrine is very useful in severe acute asthmatic attacks. Used allopathically via injection [1-5m of 1:1,000 solution as chloride], orally [5-30m of 1:1,000 solution] or in very low homeopathic dosages.
